greatness; some are born great; some achieve
greatness, others have greatness thrust upon
them." Good information technology (IT)
project managers are trained, not born. As
an IT project manager, you can achieve
greatness by improving and developing your
own skills through continued education and
experience. Your management skills will
become better each time a project is
delivered successfully. The need for skilled
IT project managers continues to grow as

The Life Cycle of an IT Project
Overview/Description
Did you know that your information
technology (IT) project becomes more
vulnerable as it goes through the various
stages of development? That's because during
each stage of development the project
becomes more complex, increasing the chances
of something going wrong. Incorporating a
structured framework for developing IT
projects, also known as a life cycle,
enables your corporation to implement
specific guidelines, methodologies, and
processes that will decrease the risk of
something going wrong and increase your
chances of a successful project. "The Life
Cycle of an IT Project" will give you the
knowledge and skills you need to define the
activities involved in your project's
development process. You'll learn how to
determine whether each phase of development
meets the requirements of the life cycle
structure. You'll also learn what you can do
to manage these activities and what steps
you can take to increase efficiencies for
delivering successful projects.
Lesson Objectives:
Life Cycle Phases: Planning
·
recognize the value of the planning phase of
the IT project life cycle.
·
match the sections of an information plan to
their examples.
·
complete an information plan for a given
project.
·
match the key activities for the planning
phase of an IT project to their examples.
·
match outputs and milestones to their
definitions.
Life Cycle Phases: Analysis and Design
·
recognize the benefits of implementing the
analysis and design phases of a project life
cycle.
·
match examples of the key activities
conducted during the analysis phase.
·
conduct the key activities for the analysis
phase of a given software development
project.
·
recognize the activities for conducting the
key activities of the design phase of the
life cycle.
·
conduct the key activities for the design
phase of a specific IT project.
Life Cycle Phases: Construction to Rollout
·
recognize the benefit of understanding the
later phases of the IT Project Life Cycle.
·
match the components of the construction
phase to their descriptions.
·
match the steps to conducting the testing
phase to their examples.
·
recognize the activities associated with
each step for conducting the rollout phase
of the life cycle.
·
choose the appropriate activities a project
manager must perform during each step of the
rollout phase for a given project.
Course 4 -
Managing the Execution and Control of IT
Projects
Overview/Description
Did you know that the average IT project has
cost overruns of nearly 200 percent, and
that almost 30 percent of all IT projects
fail? Why do you think IT projects are so
vulnerable to cost overruns and failure? How
can you ensure that your project does not
end up as one of these statistics? You can
avoid being a statistic by managing project
scope, cost, and scheduling. As you go
through this course, you will learn valuable
strategies for managing your project. You
will learn about tools to manage scope,
time, and cost that will aid in the
successful control and execution of your
project.
Lesson Objectives:
Managing the Execution of IT Projects
·
recognize the benefits of being able to
execute an IT project.
·
sequence the steps to creating an
understanding of a project's scope.

of the project scope with the team and
client sponsor in an IT project scenario.

identify the steps to updating a Gantt
chart.
·
use a Gantt chart to track the progress on a
project.
·
identify the components of a precedence
diagramming method (PDM).
·
calculate the critical path based on the PDM
for a given IT project.
·
identify the steps to determine the
resources for an IT project team.
·
apply the steps to determine the resources
for a specified IT project team.
·
sequence the steps to calculate an IT
project's resource budget.
·

Project IT Management Simulation - The Early
Stages
Overview/Description
American Auto is a large automobile company
that designs, manufactures, and markets cars
and trucks worldwide. With its one price and
no-haggle sales approach, the company has
been very successful and continues to
increase its customer base. To further
simplify the buying process, American Auto
has recently embraced the idea of upgrading
its web site's virtual showroom to allow for
online purchasing of vehicles for national
delivery. With the new web site, a customer
will be able to choose the year, model, and
options of their new vehicle and then
purchase their vehicle without ever having
to set foot in a dealer showroom. After
payment and financing options have been
arranged online, American Auto will complete
the transaction and deliver the customer's
new vehicle to their home or work. In order
to make web purchasing a reality, the
company's IT department has been tasked with
upgrading the company's web site to include
these features, and you are responsible for
overseeing this project.
Lesson Objectives:
Project IT Management Simulation - The Early
Stages
·
selecting IT professionals.
·
retaining IT professionals.
·
defining a quality project plan.
·
managing project risks.
·
